Project evaluation

Image
In the documentary unit, we had given the task of creating a 10 min documentary of our choice and it has been a very integrating experience. In the pre-production phase, we had to come up with an idea for a documentary and the first idea we had was the one we stuck with, the idea was the music industry and how difficult it may be to make it compared to back in the 90s. This was a topic that interested all of us and is a topic that can be approached in many different ways. during pre-production, we had to do many presentations of our ideas which were good as it allowed us to hear other peoples ideas and to get any insertion towards our project as we could. For the Presentations our groups have just picked roles at random as it was just my most fair way to picking roles like no one minded what they had to do, my role was to create a story synopsis of our doc which in my opinion turned out better than I expected. Getting the contributes for the documentary was a pretty fast process ...

Analysis of a documentary

short documentary review: Copycat By Charlie Shackleton   Documentary on Rolfe Kanefsky is a documentary made without using a single camera and only using a single interview. the documentary is all made up of clips from old horror movies that have inspired Rolfe into the making of his first horror film in the late 80s. "there's nothing out there" was the title of the first movie where a group of friends go up to a cabin in the woods with a guy mike who is a massive horror fan just like Rolfe in the movie does things that you would not expect from a horror film in the late 80s he becomes self-aware that he and his friend are stuck in a plot of horror, in the movie mike gives very unusual reactions to jump scares just as fans of similar movies would react as opposed to characters from movies. At 19 Rolf has made a first post-modern horror movie but all of that has quickly faded. after 2 years of nothing a blockbuster Series Scream also know as the first horror movie to be s...

Test shoots

Image
in the video, above we went out with the intention to shoot a few b rolls using our own equipment for the documentary that we would be filming around a week later, however, the shots that we have made were not really relevant to the story we were trying to tell. However, it was not a waste as it has given us a chance to test out the equipment that would be used for the documentary and to make sure everything was working perfectly and would be working for the day of the shoot. This has saved a lot of time as it cut out the process of setting up the camera and having to make sure both the gimbal and the camera setting were set correctly.  On the day of the shoots both for Charlie and praying mantis the camera op (Glenn) started rolling just to make sure that the equipment was fully working, different things such as sound, video, lighting and that the framing was perfect so there would be nothing interfering with the shoots. This was a vital step to make that the shoot run smoothly as...

Analysis of an observational documentary

Dougie Wallace: what do artists do all day? by Jack Cocker Dougie Wallace: what do artist do all day? is a documentary where we follow the life of a well-known street photographer Dougie Wallace as he finishes his project known as the "Harrodsburg" project where he captures off guard shots of the super-rich in one of Londons most exclusive postcodes. In the documentary, we also follow Dougie to Blackpool where he talks about the work he has done previously in that location and his experiences during that time. This documentary is very entertaining to watch as Dougie is a very interesting character who has many stories to tell about his carrier and the experiences he had during it with every photo that he takes having some sort of meaning whether it is a picture of someone who stands out from the rest or just something with an interesting story behind it. He does not care about what people think about him nor does he care about consequences after the photos are taken which is ...

Content research

For my role, I had to do audio and audio editing, after all the recording was done I realised that one of the microphones from the interviews sounded very grainy in order to fix that I had to look at a few YouTube tutorials on how I could possibly fix that. the first video that I found was really helpful and it helped fix the issue with the audio to an extent, it got rid of most of the grain however it has made the voices very muffled, but the video still helped me on how to make the voice overs sound much batter and how to make presets so I would not have to repeat the process over and over again. the second video that I have watched helped me get rid of the grain completely and it made the audio sound much better, the voices sound a little muffled afterwards but it was a lot better than having all of the grainy noise in the background.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSceBAQkwSo&t=236s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hkv8bOa01c From an audio workshop with Ferg, we were goin...

Workshop films/output

Image
In a lighting workshop with ferg, we went over different lighting rigs and how we could use them in the combination of the natural light around us to achieve different things. in the same workshop, we also went over different setups and camera placement we could use in order to focus on the subject we are trying to shoot. the workshop outcome was not the best as the audio was just way too quiet and the subject that we shot was too close to the background meaning that everything in the frame that shouldn't have been was in focus.   in another workshop with ferg a week later we focused on audio using a clip mic. We made a test shoot however this time with the criticisms that we had from the previous shoot we learned from our mistakes and set them up differently from the way we did previously and we made sure that the audio would come out better than it did last time. To do that we placed Ethan who was the subject of the shoot more towards the corner of the room so that we could place...
