Project evaluation
In the documentary unit, we had given the task of creating a 10 min documentary of our choice and it has been a very integrating experience. In the pre-production phase, we had to come up with an idea for a documentary and the first idea we had was the one we stuck with, the idea was the music industry and how difficult it may be to make it compared to back in the 90s. This was a topic that interested all of us and is a topic that can be approached in many different ways. during pre-production, we had to do many presentations of our ideas which were good as it allowed us to hear other peoples ideas and to get any insertion towards our project as we could. For the Presentations our groups have just picked roles at random as it was just my most fair way to picking roles like no one minded what they had to do, my role was to create a story synopsis of our doc which in my opinion turned out better than I expected. Getting the contributes for the documentary was a pretty fast process as one of our members (Glenn) had connections and was able to get dates booked quickly, however, a few issues have occurred during that as one of the contributors lost interest in the doc and we just lost contact, however, the contributors that have been arranged after was probably one of the best ones we could have got as they were very interacting character which made for a very engaging interview.
During the production phase of the documentary, we had picked roles as opposed to just picking them at random my role for it was to run the interviews and do the sound in pre and post-production. as a group we came up with around 10 questions that are relevant to the documentary we are making. whilst running the interview the hasn't been many issues that have occurred and in fact, it ran smoothly however some of the issues that did occur were that one of the channels that the clip mics were connected to was just not working however after a few minutes of looking around we came up with a solution to record both mics on a single track, one mick being the lest side an the other being the right side, it was a small inconvenience but it something that I was able to fix in post-production by simply duplicating the audio and making one track hear left from both sides and on the other track making the right side volume come from both sides. during the shoot, there was another issue that we had to overcome issue being that one of the lights were not working properly as one of the batteries did not want to connect however that was also quite an easy fix as we had quite a large team there were people that we're able to stand by the lights and hold the batteries while the interviews ran.
In post-production, ruby was doing the main edit and I just had to do the audio as some of the sound recordings that came out were just too loud and unclear and some having a very high amount of audio grain. to fix the audio I have researched online and watched a few YouTube videos on how to make the audio sound better in post with really helped me make some of the voiceovers a lot clearer and allowed me to make my own presets to make the whole process quicker. Some issues occurred when it came to taking out the audio grain, I was able to take the grain to for the most part however as there was just so much it made the voices from the interviews muffled.
In conclusion, the outcome of the documentary was a lot better than expected even tho some issues have occurred throughout the unit. Our team has done very well in each of their roles ruby being the editor/director, Glenn cinematographer/voiceovers, Ethan covid supervisor/scriptwriter, Ellie director/producer and myself being the interviewer/audio. if we did the project again I would stick with the same roles however for my part I would allow myself more time to do the audio editing to make sure it all sounds perfect without any grain, muffle per any other issue but we learn from our mistakes so if there was a next time it would be better.
