Pitch research, outcome and Analysis of a relevant show

At the start of the as live project, everyone had to come up with a live tv idea and prepare a presentation. This could be done individually or in pairs. The live tv idea had to be unique and could be done more than once, not just a one-episode show. After a little talk, me and Glenn decided to work together on this part of the project.

I decided to look into the game show Wheel of Fortune for some inspiration when coming up with our idea. Wheel of Fortune is a British television game show in which contestants compete to solve word puzzles similar to the game of hangman in order to win cash and other valuable prizes. The game's title "wheel of fortune" refers to the wheel that is spun throughout the game to determine the amount of money and prizes that are won. Wheel of Fortune debuted in 1975 as an American game show, but it began airing in the United Kingdom on Itv in 1988. At the start of the UK version of Wheel of Fortune, it was very similar to the American version with a few minor differences. In the UK, up until 1992, the independent broadcasting authority set caps on how much money could be given away per week, so instead of the week deciding how much money is given away, it just gave away points to decide who the winner would be at the end in order for them not to exceed the limit during the week. Because of the system in place, points earned by all players preceded to the next rounds, and only points for the current rounds were susceptible to bankrupts, a winner could be the one who never solves a puzzle.

when researching the wheel of fortune I decided to look into an older episode of Wheel of Fortune season 7 episode 3 from 1995, which was hosted by both Nicky Campbell and Jenny Powell. The top prizes in this episode of Wheel of Fortune were a four-wheel-drive four-door family car or a £20,000 jackpot. In this episode, there were three contestants, and the episode lasted 24 minutes rather than the usual 30. Looking back at the episode, I realise how important the host is for the show to be entertaining. Jenny, the episode's main host, is a very talkative character with a lot of energy. Jenny is able to maintain the same energy throughout the episode, which keeps the audience engaged. Not only that, but the voice overs for the vets, which were voiced by Steve Hamilton for some of the smaller prizes, are extremely entertaining. As a result, I realise that when coming up with the idea for the live show, the type of host and voice across is something that really needs to be considered in order for the show to be entertaining.

Looking into the game show wheel of fortune helped me start generating ideas for the pitch. Because of the game show, I really started to like the idea of using a fortune wheel, but instead of using the fortune wheel to win money or prizes, the fortune wheel either decides the challenges that you have to complete in order to win points or forfeits that will make the challenges that you do harder potentially having several wheels within the game. For example, one wheel may give you a challenge such as making a margarita within a certain time frame, which may be fairly easy to complete; however, you may choose to spin the other wheel, which will give you extra points if the challenge is completed, or you may stock with the challenge and receive the same amount of points as usual. The other wheel could potentially provide you with a hindrance, such as a blindfold or less time to make the drink. Just a minor stumbling block that could prevent you from completing the challenge and earning the points.

I would be just interesting to see the wheel get interpreted in some sort of way as it is a pretty interesting concept.

Coming up with ideas was difficult because we had to follow the roles that were assigned to us by both Cat and Jonathan. The show had to be unique and something that was actually possible to make within the time frame we had and with the budget we had. During the idea process, we also considered whether the show could be repeated. We considered doing a gaming talk show because gaming is quite mainstream and would appeal to a wide audience, but it would have become quite repetitive. As a result, we considered including a game show segment within the show as it would be engaging for the audience, but we decided against it. We also considered doing an impostor game show, which was inspired by looking into a YouTube group beta squad, but in order for that to be possible, the set would have to be very large, and we didn't have the time or money for that. After a while, we finally settled on the idea of a game show, and as bot, myself and Glenn enjoy geoguessr, a geography game in which you have to guess where you are. So we decided to go with a geography theme and create a geographical game show. This show's target audience would be 16 and up, and it would air after 6 p.m. on Wednesday. We reasoned that at that time, everyone should be home from work and school, so it could be a show that is played along with the audience at home.

The game show also drew inspiration from the game show pointers, such as how the game would function. During the game, there will be four teams of two, and one team will be eliminated after each round. Just like in Pointes, there would be cash builder rounds one and two, but for our one, every correct answer answered by anyone would be put into one prize pot, and the last team standing at the end of the third round would get to keep the entire prize. The first round of the game show would be a rapid fire round, in which each team would have a minute to correctly answer as many questions as possible, and the team with the fewest points would be eliminated. All of the questions would be geography themed, and each correct answer would contribute money to the final prize pot. In round two, there would be three teams remaining, and all of them would compete at the same time, each at their own podium, writing answers on a white board. There are a total of four rounds in this round, and each round the contestants are given a name of a location and four pictures to go with it, and you must match the name to the correct picture, and the team with the fewest points is eliminated. The prize pot is now decided in the final round, and the remaining teams compete in a best-of-three game. During the round, one player from each team stands at the same podium, and when the question is asked, the first to press the button has 5 seconds to answer; if incorrect, the question is passed to the next team.

After pitching and reviewing the general ideas, I realised that there is a lot that can be improved. Things like the overall concept, I believe we were trying to be too safe with the idea, and in the end it turned out to be a bit too boring, there are shows out there that have similar concepts, not necessarily the geographical side of things, but just the way the whole thing flows. Perhaps we should have concentrated on one of the other ideas we came up with, such as the wheel spin ideas or the impostor game show ideas, as I believe they have a lot of potential. Even with the whole idea that we had, I believe that if we had spent more time on it and not rushed it as much, it would have been much better outcome. And the pitch that we did could have been much better prepared, as there were several items missing.
