Test shoots

During the pre-production phase of this project, we were able to conduct a large number of test shoots. The majority of the test shoots took place in the library and gallery, which is fantastic because it allowed everyone to fully learn their roles. Additionally, because we had so many days where we could do test shoots, everyone had the opportunity to try out different roles when we had to switch roles. I think it was great that we were able to switch roles during production because it allows everyone to fully understand what everyone else is going through and what they need to do. I didn't have a set role during the filming at Uca because there wasn't much I could do, but as a result, I had the opportunity to do several different roles during that time and during the test shoot. One of the more common roles I played was that of a stand-in. Being a stand it gave other people the opportunity to test the entire flow of the production and figure out the timings of the show, which I personally enjoyed. We were running over time at first, but as we continued with the test shoots, we discovered where we could cut parts of the show to make the show exactly 30 minutes long.

I also had the opportunity to work in the sound booth during the role switch during rehearsals. This was ideal for me because sound is something I enjoy doing. It also provided me with the opportunity to learn the Vista 5 hands-on, which I had previously been unable to do. While working in sound, I was allowed to work in the library setting up the clip mics for all of the stand ins. When setting up the clip mics, you must ensure that the receive and the mic are both on the same frequency, and you must also ensure that the packs have enough charge to last the shooting period. Because of the rehearsals, the process has become smoother and faster, with fewer issues than at the start of the project.

As I was lighting the test shoots, communication between myself and the director helped us figure out what light should go where and what gels needed to be on the light in order for the set to be complete. The broken battery of the led light kept disconnecting or not connecting at all most of the time, which was an issue at first. We eventually decided to connect the light directly to a power source so we wouldn't have to worry about it during the shoot. Before we had the set, we used the nova with a bright pink colour pointing directly at the scaling, which looked perfect. However, when the new set was built, and because the set contained a lot of grey, the pink just looked too much, it was overdone, so we decided to change to a nice amber colour, and the other standout colours would simply be in the corner of the rooms, both behind the contestants and behind the queen's throne.

Overall, the test shoots have improved to the point where some of them are on par with the final show, minus the costumes and some of the proms. The test shoot was an extremely beneficial part of the project and for each of the participants individually. particularly myself It increased my confidence in the final outcome and the show's success.
