Project evaluation

For the news unit, we were given the task of creating a 5-minute news video which consisted of a 2:30min news package and a 2min live ob report. We also had to create a website and an Instagram page which we could use to promote our news piece. This unit has been a very interesting experience as it has given me a chance to do things that I haven't tried before. Even tho we have come across some challenges during the process the outcome has come out better than I have expected.

During the first week of the unit we got put into groups of 4 where we got tasked with coming up with a news package idea news after some time brainstorming we decided we wanted our news piece to be quite different, we decided that we wanted to use some sort comedy for our idea, however, because of this, it left us with very limited choices what we can film because otherwise, it would just be inappropriate if we chose harder-hitting subject. As a group we were looking on different news platforms such as apple news, the guardian and even Instagram to help us find an idea after a while I stumbled across a new law that will be coming into play in the coming months, a law that makes it that all the tips earned by hospitality workers are 100% there's an no one else's. With that, we found something we could poke fun at, Salt Bea also known as Nusret Gökçe who recently lost a lawsuit because he was keeping his workers tips for himself. For the live OB, we came up with the idea to talk about the whole fuel crisis because at that moment it was such a big deal and there was tons of potential. In the group, we have picked roles me being the producer and in charge of the graphics, George anchor director and an editor, Vicky camera and director and Katie as a reporter, scriptwriter and director. When the roles got assigned we decided on the locations we wanted to shoot at first one being the green room which was easy to get permission for and a petrol garage at bluebell hill which I had to try and get permission which was probably one of the hardest parts during the whole process. during the process of trying to get a petrol garage to permit us, I have wasted several days on the phone and emailing back and forth with companies such as Shell, Asda and Tesco and even going there directly to ask for permission. because of this, we had to start thinking of a backup plan as we were not sure if it even is possible to get permission for filming at a petrol station. our backup plan became the green screen room in case we can't get a location. Thursday of the shoot week was our last chance to get a location so I decided to ask permission at my local shell garage which is co-owned with Greggs so all I need was to get permission from one or the other and thankfully Greggs has agreed.

because I was the graphic designer or the group I had to create a few things such as an into, logos and a moving logo to use as a watermark for the final news pieces. I was very worried at the beginning about doing the graphic design as it was something I have never even tried before. however, that worry quickly faded after we had a chance to do a workshop on graphic design and green screens with Fergus. This allowed me to gain more confidence when using after-effects and it helped me spark ideas of how I want the graphics to look. for the logo, I have decided to create a few rough sketches which allowed me to quickly come up with quite a few logo ideas however after talking with my group we had two left and just found a lot to decide between which one. The first one was new news in a cross pattern with a globe behind it and the next one was a minimalistic overlapping NN with the colours green and blue which represent the water of the globe and the green represents the land. I made both logos in adobe illustrate because it did not take too much time and in the end, we decided to go with the overlapping NN as it fits better with everything and Because it would be simple to make a moving graphic out of it. to make the moving graphic I took adobe to illustrate the file and imported it into adobe after effects where I watched a tutorial on how to turn a flat image into a 4d moving file which surprisingly did not take too much time. however, the one issue I had with it was when I went to render the file because I needed it as a png file without a background so it would be easier to insure into the final edit. the last graphic that I needed to do was the intro which is where I struggled I just did not have enough time to do what I wanted to so I have decided to go with a preexisting template in which I changed the name extended the banner behind the name and changed the colour of the whole intro from purple to blue.

For the website, I decided to use wix.com as it has templates that are ready to use and ones that would look good for what we strung to go for. I picked a template that I liked and when I was nearly finished editing it I realised that some of the colours I was unable to change did not go with the colour scheme I was going for, I had to take the website and start from scratch however, I am glad that I did because I learned from my mistakes and the website came out even better than before. on the website, I have made two news entries that would briefly talk about what our news stories are about.

during both of the shoots, we didn't have a specific person who looked after the audio so with the help from others In the group, I made sure that the audio was at the right level during the shots and made sure that the clip mics were folly worked before we started shooting.

In conclusion, the whole project was a success everything has turned out as planned and the outcome came out better than we expected that is all because we had a very well organised team who knew what each one of their roles were everyone was willing to help one another to overcome certain challenges if any came up. If I ever did this project again I would do some things different things such as the into for graphic design I believe I am fully capable of doing something like the template with ought using the template just need to give myself more time and not leave it to last minute. I would off also tried looking for the locations earlier as it would have saved me a lot of time and stress. And I would take on the role of a producer a lot more seriously as I feel that I was lacking in that area.
