Final evaluation directions

The directions unit I thought was very interesting. there has been a lot of things that I have learnt and tons of skills I have improved on. I have learnt how to storyboard, work with different lighting, I found out different things a director has to focus on that I had no clue previously. I enjoyed doing the storyboard as it was a way of getting my ideas on paper. another part I thought was really helpful was the workshops as they're not just for the directions unit, the skills I have learned for example the lighting can be incorporated into almost any other unit and it is just a big part of the film in general.    one downside of the unit was the fact that we were in lockdown so it was quite hard to focus and just get things done during the period, this also got us away from the filming part which would have been very interesting just to see the outcome and the difference between the scene you chose and the final outcome.

Directors treatment

a guy with zero motivation and nothing but self-doubt comes across a pill that will change his life forever. set in 2011 the film limitless is an action/thriller where Eddie who can be seen both as the protagonist and the antagonist discovers a pill that turns his life upside down. Eddie is an unmotivate character that can not get anything done in his life once he discovers the nzt pill and feels the effects of the drug he knows exactly what he wants to do and exactly how he needs to do it, but it's not as simple as that he faces many challenges after the pill and comes across very dangerous criminals that want to feel the same power fo the pill.  In the scene, Eddie feels the effects of the pill mid-conversation with Valerie who is eddies, landlords wife.  At that point the mood changes completely and Eddie becomes a different man. The way I have envisioned the scene was with very dark moody tones when Eddie is off the pill and a very bright almost overwhelming yellow t...

Animatic

Image
The animatic was a good way of making the storyboard more understandable and it shows what I'm going for a lot more clear. with the animatic, I was able to show some of the transitions I had in mind. in my animatic I added some sound as a way of showing when the mood changes in the scene for example when Eddie takes the nzt pill the music changes completely to show that the mod has changed. withing the scene. The overall edit was really fun to do and I think it worked quite well. However, if I had the chance to do the edit again I would put in more time on adding sound effects to the parts that most need it and maybe incorporate a clour pallet for each frame just as an extra way of showing when the mood changes.

Story board

Image
In my storyboard I have decided to dedicate colours for certain parts of the scene for example red being the colour that represents Eddie and purple the on that represents Valerie, I used the colour blue to represent the frame of the shot and the smaller blue frames to show where it would either pan or zoom to.  some shots that I wanted to do I was just not able to draw it out so I simply labelled it to what would be an initial idea of the shot. I have done the whole storyboard in 9 frames however some frames contain an extra 1-3 frames which saved me a lot of time and didn't change what I was trying to show/achieve. I thought the storyboard went well however if I did it again I would try and show some of the transitions I had in mind in some sort of way because for some of the shots it is just not as clear as I would like it to be.

Workshops - Directing unit

Image
Ken burns effect workshop. In a workshop with Ferg, we were taught how to do the ken burns effect on still images in premiere pro. This was a very useful workshop as it taught me how to size images and move them around witch I did not how to do previously, it was a similar principle for sound as well, it has taught me how to make the volume louder or quieter depending on what I was trying to achieve.  This was especially helpful for the animatic as it gave me a lot more freedom in what I was trying to show and it gave the final animatic a lot more depth.    3 point lighting workshop. In a lighting workshop with Ferg, we went over all different aspects of lighting such as colour temperature, colour pallets,  different types of lights, shadows and angles.  This was helpful as it gave me a deeper overall understanding of lighting and what moods/effects I can create using different angles and the amount of light.  Lighting is very important in any type of filmm...

Character profiles

Image
Eddie Morra Eddie is in his 30s, he is a struggling writer who is based in New York City. At first, Eddie lacks ambition, motivation and focus. However after the first pill he takes everything changes, he finally gains motivations and he knows exactly what he wants to do. Before the pill eddies speech is quite slurred and cannot get his pint across but when he takes the pill he becomes very formal and knows exactly what to say to others. Eddie is a very scruffy person he does not take care of himself or any of his possessions. Eddies style also changes quit as he progresses, he goes from all black distressed clothing to wearing full suits.     Valerie  Valerie also in her 30s, she is a student and the landlord of eddies. She is a very stressed person and has a short temper, that's why she loses it when she meets eddies in the stairway. When Valerie talks her voice high and she likes to jump to conclusion when talking to others. Valerie has long black hair and quite a...

Location research

Image
As my scene is all based indoors all I had to do is find a single location that is in a rough condition. The location I found has the ideal look of what I am going for. Eddie is very unmotivated and broke so his living conditions are not the the best, his place is extremely untidy and it almost looks like it has been abandoned, which is great as the location I chose is abandoned. The hallways of the location are very good because they have a very dark blue colour pallet which is what my chosen scene starts with, when you finally get into the apartment it is a lot brighter which would make it a lot easier to work with as that is when Eddie is on the pill that is when the colour pallet changes.                                        ...

Mood Boards

Colour pallet    The colour pallets that I have chosen are quite similar to the original as I think that part was perfectly executed and there Is not much more I could add, however, I decided to make the before the pill scenes duller than in the original and the after the pill colours a lot brighter so when it goes from one to another there is more of a visual difference. one other thing I have decided to add was glares of light when he is on the pill just as a way of showing that everything is bright to Eddie.  Shots I have decided to do very symmetrical shots for the after the pill scenes because I believe if I was on the pill I would become sort of a perfectionist and the symmetry would be a si...
