Director Research: Neil Burger

Neil Burger is an American film and television director, writer, and producer. He is best known for directing films such as divergent, the illusionist, The upside, and limitless (2011). Afterwards, he became an executive producer for the follow-ups of divergent (insurgent and allegiant) He was also the executive producer for the tv series limitless(2015-2016).

In the movie, Limitless Neil uses a very bright yellow colour and a dull blue colour to represent when Bradley cooper off and on the pill, Blue being off and yellow on it. Doing this helps guide the audience and makes it clear on what is happening during each scene. In Limitless Neil uses wide shots of Bradley when he is off the pill which gives it a feeling of him being watched and not in control, however, when Bradley takes the pill the shots are more close up showing the audience that he is very much in control. This technique is very useful in film in general as it is effective in guiding the audience and making the fell what you want them to feel.

Whilst Going thru Neils work I have noticed that his style is quite different in every movie he does, probably because his style changed throughout the years. for example in Limitless Neil likes to use a lot of extreme close-ups to make some of the scenes very intense however in The Upside he barely uses extreme close-ups or even close-ups, he mainly focused on using medium closeups instead which was still effective in what he was stying to tell.

I like Neil as a director because he has a wide range of styles and techniques he uses throughout his work, every piece of work he does is unique and he makes it work.
