Edited outcomes from workshop exercises

one of the first workshops in the fiction adaptation unit was the haiku interpretation. in this workshop, the whole class got a selection of 3 different haikus with 3 lines and had 2 hours to interpret them in the way we see or like using stock footage and music that we can find online. out of the 3 haikus I have decided to go with one by Kobayashi Issa which says;

The wren

Earns his living

Noiselesly

I have chosen this haiku as it was the one that appealed to me the most and the one that had the most possible and different genres that could be pulled from those 3 lines. however, I have decided to focus on the word noiselessly. after around 3o minutes of searching for clips, I have finally decided to do the piece of animals and focus on the idea of noiselessly, how certain animals spend their entire lives trying to avoid conflict and live their lives in pieces trying to avoid most other animals. however it was quite hard to find good stock footage of lone animals that did avoid conflict such as sloths koalas, so I decided just to use 2 animals that avoid conflict and one that appears to be avoiding it at the moment. the animals that I have used were a giraffe, sloth, and a gazelle with its child. when I decide to use those animals I made use I found footage of the same animals that were taken using different shots such as a wide shot to capture the environs that the very animals are in and close up shots of the animal's face which allows it to show more emotion when editing. in the edit, I needed to make the footage move and pan to give it more depth as the footage that I did find was all static and did not move so in the edit I made some of the shots pans towards the animals like shots that were close-ups and establashing shots that were wide and captured the animals' environment I made it so it tracked the animal as it moved in the scene. And as for the music I decided to use a slow piano so it would add a little more emotion into the edit. I believe that the edit turned out pretty well considering the amount of time that we had been given I liked the whole flow of the video and the music worked well, however, if I did do the video again I would like to use different animals like the ones that would have been in the same kind of environments because it seemed as it was just random animals added together.

In another Worksop, we were given a PowerPoint presentation on different shots, compositions with examples and camera movement. This was a very useful and informative workshop as it has given me an insight into how different emotions can be shown thru simply using different shots and compositions. some of the different compositions that we were shown were the rule of thirds and the rule of the fourth rule of fourth being the more uncommon one that is used. the rule of fourth was used in the 2016 movie Mr robot where the subject was placed far left of the shot to give a very unease feeling and to create tension in the scene. I thought the was very interactive as it was not something that you see all the time in the industry. some of the shot types that we were shown were long shots, dolly room, track, crane and duct angle. the duct angle was the one that caught my eye as it created a very weird feeling in the scene and was something that I decided to try out later on in the workshop with our assigned groups. in groups, we were tasked to recreate 3 emotions using either the shots, movements and compositions that were provided or finding out own that fit the emotions we chose. the 3 emotions that we decided to do were anxiety, hopefulness and rage. for anxiety, we decided to experiment with the role of the fourth composition and having the subjects in the bottom left of the screen and making them very small as it would make I seem as they are not where they are supposed to be and not in the right set of mind. for anxiety we also used a tilt camera movements from a hight, Anger, to make the subject seem a lot smaller than they were with the idea that they would seem surrounded by the walls of the room giving it an uneasy feeling. after a little bit of research, we have decided to use an extreme close up of the eyes for rage as it would be the best way to display someone's emotions, for rage we also decide to use the colour red as it would add a lot more to the scene as red is the colour that represents s anger and a for the camera movement we decided to do both a fast dolly room and a shot where it wrapped around the subject, for that shot the camera started in the far right corner and went to the left side of the subject as it simultaneously turned his and looked directly into the leased for a more intense feeling. I believe that it went extremely well and the emotion was displayed well especially Anger as we were arable to use the colour red to our advantage however this could have come out even better if we got our hands on a gamble instead of using the camera handheld.
